2010 Bill of Rights CELEbration

Wow! What an event!

Thanks to all who joined us for our 39th Annual Bill of Rights Celebration at Soulard Preservation Hall. This festive evening included a wonderful mix of longtime ACLU supporters and a growing base of new friends coming together to reflect on a year and build momentum for the work we continue to do.

This year's Civil Liberties Award Recipients:

Attorneys Robert (Bob) Herman and Arlene Zarembka.

Herman is an ACLU cooperating attorney who, in defense of free speech, consistently takes on the least popular clients. These have included the KKK who sued the state of Missouri for the right to participate in the “Adopt a Highway” program; a neo-Nazi group that sued Bi-State over content discrimination when they removed the group’s paid ads from metro buses; and the Council of Conservative Citizens who sued the public libraries of University City, Maplewood, and Valley Park for blocking the group’s website from their public internet terminals.

Zarembka is a long-time member of the ACLU-EM Legal Committee and a cooperating attorney. For more than 25 years she has represented lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons and been a leading advocate for LGBT rights. Most recently, she was the ACLU-EM cooperating attorney on the national ACLU legal team that helped defeat the anti-affirmative action ballot initiative here in Missouri.
