Rainbow Youth Coalition

Information and Guidelines

Mission:

The Rainbow Youth Coalition is a youth led organization working to create a more tolerant and respectful environment for LGBT youth in schools and in the community, by fostering leadership and activism in local LGBT youth and their allies.

Job Description:

The Rainbow Youth Coalition is a diverse group of youth leaders who care about fighting homophobia and transphobia in schools. The Youth Coalition is responsible for planning and promoting events for area LGBT youth and their allies, as well as supporting the presence of St. Louis area Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs).

Schedule:

The Youth Coalition meets once a month, generally on a Saturday. Meetings will take place at the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, and will be facilitated by Scott Emanuel, Project Coordinator at the ACLU of Eastern Missouri office. Representatives are chosen annually, in April and will serve on the Youth Coalition until March of the following year. Those selected for the Coalition will serve from 2006 until 2007.

Member Types:

General Member: Youth between the ages of 14 and 19, who is not currently enrolled in school, or who is enrolled in a school that doesn’t have a GSA

GSA Representative Member: Youth between the ages of 14 and 19, who is currently active in high school GSA. (One member from each school will be selected to represent their school’s GSA

Responsibilities and requirements are the same for both member categories.

Member Responsibilities:

1. Serve on the Youth Coalition for one year

2. Prepare for and attend monthly meetings of the Youth Coalition

3. Participate in setting goals and making decisions about St. Louis area programs for LGBT youth and their allies

4. Identify needs of GSAs and LGBT youth and allies in schools and the community and actively participating in local programs and events addressing these needs

Skills/Requirements:

1. Must be between the ages of 14 and 19

2. Willing to commit to serve on the Youth Coalition for one year

3. Interested in developing and suggesting ideas to strengthen youth leadership in your schools and communities

4. Committed to creating change for LGBTQ youth and fighting homophobia/transphobia in schools and the community

5. Be able to work well in a group
