| Americans enjoy a degree of religious freedom unknown in most of the
world, and they take full advantage of it: the United States is home to
more than 1,500 different religious groups and 360,000 churches,
synagogues and mosques. Eighty-one percent of Americans claim a
religious identity and more than half say they pray at least once a
day, according to the 2001 American Religious Identification Survey.
The Constitution’s framers understood very well that religious
freedom would flourish only if the government stayed out of religion
and if religious decisions remained a personal and private matter.
Yet, attempts to create government-funded religion are a growing
thread to our religious freedom. Efforts to fund religion with taxpayer
dollars range from creating vouchers for religious school tuition to
paying groups to provide “faith-based” social services. Equally
troublesome are efforts to amend the Constitution to replace student’s
individual right to religious expression with official government-led
prayers in schools.
