An employee of the post office’s bulk
mailing facility in Hazelwood was sent home for wearing a t-shirt featuring
Malcolm X and the quotation: “By any means necessary.” The facility has always allowed its employees
to wear t-shirts with written messages.
The complainant had been wearing black-history-related t-shirts,
including the one in question, each February for years without incident. After receiving letters from the ACLU of
Eastern Missouri, the Postal Service agreed to allow their employee to continue
wearing expressive clothing and to pay her for the day at work she missed when
she was sent home because of the message on her shirt.
