Racial Profiling
:
The St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners will discuss the age old problem of racial bias in traffic stops. A 1999 report issued by the ACLU concluded that blacks are roughly twice as likely to be ticketed for traffic violations.
Racial Profiling Bill
:
ACLU announces proposed legislation to track traffic stops while providing examples of racial profiling in St. Louis.
Internet Censorship
:
Missouri House bill being opposed by ACLU would require all schools and libraries to place filtering software on their Internet terminals.
Student Press Awards
:
This year's Student Press Liberties Award winners are Bernear Day, Kenneth Jones and Crystal Lewis of St. Louis Central Visual and Performing Arts High School (VAP) for their school paper's special edition on a St. Louis suburban school.
Profiling Bill Passed
:
The American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri today praised the Missouri Legislature for taking a bold step towards ending racial profiling in the state of Missouri by overwhelmingly passing legislation prohibiting racial profiling and requiring police departments state-wide to keep racial statistics on all police stops.
Boy Scout Ruling
:
By a 5 to 4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Boy Scouts unwritten policy of discriminating against homosexuals.
Supreme Court Upholds Miranda Warnings
:
Carnahan Signs Profiling Bill
:
Supporters of the law say its passage is an important step toward ending the practice commonly known as racial profiling or driving while black. A 1999 report issued by the ACLU entitled Driving While Black: Racial Profiling on Our Nation's Highways reviewed a number of studies around the country showing that non-white drivers are much more likely to be stopped and/or searched by the police.
Civilian Oversight of Police
:
Citizen oversight agencies are effective in combating police misconduct. This finding is the basic argument of Police Accountability: The Role of Citizen Oversight, by Samuel Walker, Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Drug Checkpoints
:
In yet another sign that the government has overstepped its authority in the war on drugs, the Supreme Court today found unconstitutional the Indiana state police's practice of using roadblocks with drug-sniffing dogs. The ruling effectively overturns a 1996 decision by the Missouri Supreme that upheld the use of such roadblocks.
