ACLU to Protect Voting Rights
:
The office of the American Civil Liberties Union Of Eastern Missouri (ACLU/EM) will serve as the Legal Command Center from which the St. Louis Voting Rights Coalition will communicate with volunteer poll workers stationed at more than 70 polling places throughout St Louis.
ACLU Hires New Executive Director
:
The American Civil Liberties Union Of Eastern Missouri (ACLU/EM) announced today that Brenda Jones has officially taken over the reigns of the St. Louis-based civil liberties organization. Jones was hired as Executive Director in September following an extensive nationwide search.
ACLU Challenges Voting Practice
:
Legal advocates filed suit in federal court today against the State of Missouri to end the practice of barring people from voting or registering to vote because they have been placed under court-ordered guardianship.
Homeless Sue Police for Abuse
:
More than a dozen homeless persons, many of them veterans, filed a lawsuit in federal court on September 17, 2004 complaining that the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has a policy of attempting to drive the homeless from downtown St. Louis and telling them downtown is ≥off limits≈ to them.
Activists Speak out on Surveillance

On the opening day of the Republican National Convention, three young political activists who were subpoenaed as part of an investigation by the FBI≠s Joint Terrorism Task Force in Kirksville, Missouri revealed their identities today, saying that they can no longer remain silent as the FBI steps up its efforts to spy on and interrogate other political protesters.
ACLU Denounces FBI Tactics
:
The American Civil Liberties Union today denounced the FBI's use of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) to monitor, interrogate and suppress anti-war and other political protesters and called on individuals who have been targeted for investigation to come forward.
ACLU Launches Surveillance Campaign

The U.S. security establishment is rapidly increasing its ability to monitor average Americans by hiring or compelling private-sector corporations to provide billions of customer records, according to a report released today by the American Civil Liberties Union.

On the heels of litigation by the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, a 13-year old Doniphan Middle School student was allowed to attend her 8th Grade Graduation today in a pantsuit instead of the dress the school principal had tried to make her wear.
Bush Pushes PATRIOT Act

The American Civil Liberties Union today urged Congress and the American people to reject the latest call by the Bush administration to extend the USA Patriot Act. The ACLU said that the president≠s renewed request, which came in new campaign advertising that began airing today, is misleading and ignores strong bi-partisan support for fixes to the law.
Racial Justice Initiative Continues
:
The ACLU of Eastern Missouri is one of only three ACLU affiliate offices nationwide to be awarded an Ira Glasser Racial Justice Fellow by the national ACLU office. The Glasser fellow program was launched last year with the intent of providing affiliates with the means to start a staffed racial justice project.
